Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster

by Jonathan Auxier

The heaviest book on this list by a wide margin. Victorian London, a chimney sweep girl, and the golem who guards her. Real child labor, a young sweep dies, and Nan is badly hurt in a chimney fire. It earns all of it, but go in knowing.

Bera the One-Headed Troll

by Eric Orchard

A pumpkin farming troll finds a human baby and quests to carry it home past a witch who wants it for a recipe. Deliberately macabre, and a baby in real peril drives the plot.
